SNV the Netherlands Development Organisation and ADT Projekt GmbH formed a consortium to implement on behalf of GIZ the project Technical Cooperation with Zambia, Green Innovation Centres – Dairy Value Chain, funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany.

The overall objectives of the Green Innovation Centre’s activities along the dairy value chain in Zambia are to improve the income of smallholder dairy farmers in the Southern Province, increase the employment rate and to improve the local availability of dairy products. The new project is especially working together with smallholder dairy cooperatives as point of entry

  1. to improve the technical, financial and managerial capacity of small holder dairy farmers,
  2. to improve the capacity of cooperatives in terms of local service provision and governance,
  3. to create links to the enabling environment and to provide input to strengthen the capacity of national lobby groups,

thereby strengthening the dairy sector in Zambia.

The project has a duration of two years (2018 -2019) and forms the second phase of the Market-led Dairy Innovations Project (M-DIP), implemented by SNV.

BTSF training courses on Animal IRT successfully completed in 2017

BTSF Lyon 10 Group Work

The 20th training event on Animal IRT under the BTSF initiative ended where it all began four years ago in Bourg-en-Bresse. A total of 545 trainees coming from all 28 European Member States and 12 selected other countries have been trained over the period of four years within 20 training events on Animal Identification, Registration and Traceability (IRT) under the Better Training for Safer Food (BTSF) initiative. This training was designed for officials carrying out inspection or being responsible for or involved in the design, management and operation of Animal IRT and has been implemented in five different training locations in Portugal, Slovenia, France, Germany and Poland.

BTSF is an initiative from the European Commission resulting from the commitment assumed with the Member States after implementing the hygiene package in regulation 882/2004 with the purpose to train the officials from different Member States and some connected countries to harmonize their practices, procedures and to create a common operative culture more close to the spirit of the hygiene package.

The training course on Animal IRT provided an overview on the most relevant fields related to animal IRT and covered the legal and institutional framework as well as technical and IT matters on the implementation and control of Animal IRT systems. It has developed during four years to be a stable format and reached its targeted objectives. The strategy and methodological approach was appropriate for knowledge transfer in this subject and the training material turned to be a comprehensive sample for future knowledge share. We felt ourselves endorsed by a constantly high evaluation of our courses and tutors given by the participants as well as the feedback of representatives of EU Commission (DG SANTE).
